This pub is, in Chester@Large's opinion, the prettiest looking in Chester. It's an old inn in the distinctive local black and white style with a bar, restaurant and rooms upstairs. Inside, the bar is dark, mostly timber with a low beamed ceiling, Tiffany lamps, partitions of wood with panels of stained glass and a mixture of wooden and carpeted areas. Seats are old pews or more comfortable upholstered benches.
One enters the establishment with high expectations. But, alas, one's hopes are dashed. There will be no friendly greeting as one approaches the bar - the staff are usually lurking in some back room and the bar is unmanned. There is an air of seediness. This is a haven for solitary drinkers, Desperate Dan types, with stubble and greasy macs. There is nothing to lighten the gloom or cheer the soul.
Drinks are adequately served and prices moderate. There are menus on the tables during the day: the food is uninspired. Come here with a crowd and dispel the gloom yourselves.
